3D letters or a lightbox? Choosing the right sign

Two common signs, two different tools: letters build prestige and work with the facade, a lightbox wins on legibility from a distance. Which to choose?

The short answer

If you have an attractive facade and care about class — 3D channel letters. If what matters most is that someone across the street can read your name and tell what you offer — a lightbox. The rest of this article explains why, and covers the cases where the answer is different.

3D letters — when the sign should work with the building

3D letters are mounted individually, directly onto the wall, so the background stays visible. The sign does not cover the architecture — it cooperates with it. You can see this in our project for JLM, where letters and logo went onto a brick facade, and in the SOPOT lettering on a wooden wall.

Letters offer three ways to illuminate them, and that choice defines the character of the sign. Front lighting makes the letter face glow and is the most legible. Back lighting produces the halo effect — a glow on the wall behind unlit letter faces; it is the most elegant variant, and we have built it for the Orto Viva clinic, for N&N Nadratowski and for XIOR. Full illumination combines both.

Letters work at any scale — from a name above a restaurant entrance, as at Podwale Piwna Kompania and U Szwejka, through signage for shops and clinics, to large-format work: Hotel Groman on its own structure, or the illuminated Peek & Cloppenburg and Cinema City letters, legible from a long distance after dark.

  • The facade is attractive and you want it to show.
  • Prestige matters — the halo effect looks more expensive than any other sign.
  • The logo has an unusual shape, or the name is short.
  • You want to avoid the look of cheap advertising on the building.

A lightbox — when legibility and visibility come first

A lightbox is a sealed, illuminated body with a face of Plexiglas, polycarbonate or dibond. It has one advantage letters cannot match: a large, uniform glowing surface. That keeps it legible from a distance and helps it stand out even when neighbouring premises are lit too. We have built them for hospitality — the New Vegas pizzeria and Fuego — and for companies such as Dell, Delia Cosmetics and Hitmark Robotics.

A lightbox also carries more than a name. Its face can hold a logo, a tagline and graphics, and for intricate patterns dibond allows precise milled shapes. Dimensional and unusual forms are possible: cloud-shaped lightboxes for The Brain Embassy, Batida's round lightbox, or the 3D lightbox with milled, raised letters for the Bocian brand.

We make lightboxes single- and double-sided. The second can transform how visible the premises are — which is the subject of the next section.

  • The premises sit in a retail row and compete for attention.
  • Beyond the name you need to show a logo, your trade or a tagline.
  • The facade is unremarkable and there is nothing to show off.
  • The name is long — in 3D letters it becomes disproportionately expensive.

The difference clients forget: which way people are looking

A flat sign on a facade — letters or lightbox alike — is only seen by someone standing opposite it. A pedestrian walking along the building looks parallel to the wall and simply will not notice it until they are right at the entrance.

The answer is a projecting lightbox, also called a semaphore — set perpendicular to the wall and legible from both directions along the street. We have built these for Batida and for Blue Cactus. If your premises face a busy pavement, one projecting sign often does more than a larger one on the facade.

The same logic applies at a company entrance: there a double-sided or freestanding lightbox works, like the one with a polycarbonate face we mounted on the JLM company fence.

Durability and materials — outdoors is not the same as indoors

We install both solutions indoors and outdoors, but facades call for materials resistant to rain, frost and UV. Outdoor lightboxes add seals that protect the body and the electronics inside — without them, water gets in sooner or later.

This matters when comparing quotes: a lightbox sold as outdoor but without proper sealing, and one built for a Polish winter, are two different products even though they look identical in a photo. In both cases the illumination is LED-based and energy-efficient.

Indoors there are fewer constraints and more freedom — as with the decorative Bombay Sapphire and Tomas lightboxes, or the lightbox zone signage we made for Senora Senor.

You do not always have to choose

In many projects both solutions sit side by side, and that is often the best arrangement: 3D letters carrying the name above the entrance, plus a projecting lightbox or an entrance lightbox as the element legible from the street. That is how the JLM signage works — letters on the facade and a lightbox on the fence.

Combined forms can also live in a single sign: for Cukiernia Bracia Sośniccy we built a project where green glass-neon lettering, 3D letters and a lightbox work together. If the budget allows only one element, start with the one that solves the real problem — which usually means visibility.

Four things to settle before a quote

Answers to these are enough for us to prepare a design and a quote — we will advise on the rest.

  • The width of the facade or window, and the height at which the sign will hang.
  • From what distance and from which direction people should see it.
  • Whether power is already run to that spot, or has to be brought in.
  • Whether, beyond the name, the sign must carry a logo, a tagline or your trade.

How it works with us

The quote is free. From your logo or wording we prepare a design, a visualisation and a quote — a vector file is ideal, but a photo of the facade and a sketch are enough to start. We will help match the type of letters or lightbox to the specific building and advise on installation and formalities.

Production happens in our own workshop near Warsaw, with no middlemen. We carry out installation ourselves, including electrical connections and work at height — we are certified for it. Afterwards we provide servicing and maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheaper — 3D letters or a lightbox?
There is no single answer: the price depends on the dimensions, the number of characters, the type of illumination and the installation. Worth knowing that with 3D letters every character is made separately, so the length of the wording affects the cost more than it does with a lightbox. We quote every project individually, and the quote is free.
Which sign is more visible from a distance?
A lightbox, because it has a large, uniform glowing surface. 3D letters win on aesthetics and presence, but at the same character height a lightbox is usually noticeable from further away.
Is a lightbox suitable for outdoor use?
Yes. For outdoor use we apply materials and seals that guarantee reliability whatever the weather — worth checking when comparing quotes, because an unsealed lightbox will not survive a winter.
What is the halo effect on 3D letters?
It is back lighting: the letter face stays unlit while light falls on the wall behind it, creating a glow around the outline. It is the most elegant of the variants — we built signs this way for Orto Viva Clinic and XIOR, among others.
Do you install signs on facades?
Yes. We install illuminated advertising including electrical connections, at height as well — we are certified for it. We also remove previous signage and provide servicing and maintenance.
Can the sign be made from my logo?
Yes. Every project is prepared individually — from your logo or wording we produce a design, a visualisation and a quote. A vector file is ideal, but a photo is enough to start.
